Phish Gorge 2013

08/29/2013

The Gorge is the absolute, most beautiful place I have ever been. I honestly had the best weekend with friends old and new. We spent Thursday night in downtown Seattle bar hopping and even danced to an R&B band. Friday we were up bright and early to start the 2 hour drive to The Gorge. A mile outside the venue we met up with about 8 other cars to caravan into the venue. Once inside we claimed the perfect campsite. A group from Oregon packed absolutely everything we could have needed for the weekend… pop up tents, tarps, sound system and christmas lights. Our campsite was a shinning beacon of light on the walk home. Each night ended with an all out dance party to 70’s funk and 60’s twist rock n’ roll.  The venue is quite far from the campsite but the walk only builds the anticipation to enter the breathtaking venue. Once inside you crest a small hill and drop right into The Gorge Amphitheater. There is almost a wall of people standing in awe and snapping pictures.

Friday we watched the sunset from the hill before heading into the wide open pit for the 2nd set. Friday was Chris Kuroda, Phish’s lighting director, birthday so Trey lead the crowd singing Happy Birthday. It just so happened to be my friend William’s birthday so we sang to him too. We also had a full moon that night so the band stopped playing and turned off the lights for a “Moon Jam” where the crowd howled at the moon!

Saturday we drove to a nearby boat slip and went swimming in the Columbia River. The water was freezing but really refreshing from the nonstop heat. Some friends rented jet skis and boats to cruise the river and look at the venue from the water (on the list for 2015). That night we had a great spot on the floor in front of the midway rail. Two young security guards sat behind us catching glowsticks and handing them to us. One of the boys asked, how we all knew when to throw the glowsticks? Trying to put that into words during the middle of Fluffhead was hard, but I told him to listen to the music building. I told them to listen for the crowd to yell “FLUFFHEAD” then to stand up, look back on the crowd and let’em rip. Their jaws dropped, a very cool moment for me and them.

I thought the shows were fantastic. A few repeats from the Merriweather show, but other than that it was all perfect. Highlights for me were Crosseyed & Painless, Roses are Free, After Midnight, Sneaking Sally > 2001 and Run Like An Antelope.

Phish Week – Dream Show Round Two

08/26/2013

phishsummertourThe summer is coming to a close and so is Phish Summer Tour 2013.  Since coming home from the Gorge at the end of July, I have been counting down the days till Trey, Page, Mike and Fishmen return to Denver. In my opinion, this tour has been the best we have ever seen the boys play in 3.0. Haters gonna hate, but I can’t wait to WOOOOOOOO  all weekend long (#tahwoozer). You can catch up on the entire tour here and here.

This weekend will be extra special because of the massive crew we have attending these shows. I saw my first Phish show at Red Rocks in 09′ with my dear friend Bill. This will be our first phish show together since New Years 2012. I could not be more excited for this weekend – only 4 more days!!

Last year during Phish Week, I posted a “dream show” so here is my dream show round two. I have seen 3 shows this summer and after the 3 this weekend I will reach 20 Phish shows. I have been waiting all tour to hear a few songs: NICU, Boogie on, Meatstick, Divided Sky, YEM, Ghost and Sand.  There are also a few others songs I have already heard this summer that I would love to boogie too again – Twist, Sneaking Sally, 2001 and Fluffhead.

Lots more Phish action coming this week – Phish Gear, Phish Gorge Recap and a Welcome Phish Phans to Denver! Heading to your first shows this weekend – check out What to Wear to Phish!

Songs For Emily

08/19/2013

Two years ago I lost my very best friend. I miss her constantly, but more than anything I just wish I could hangout with her again. Specifically, in my Tahoe driving around Atlanta. The Christmas I got my car was right when Outkast’s “Speakerbox/Love Below” album was released. We knew every word and blasted it all around Buckhead. We listened and danced to everything, Perpetual Groove, Guster, Rufus Wainwright, MOE. and even some Christian Rock albums… Most of my memories of Em involve dancing – PDC’s and Deb Balls, dancing with my parents at the lake, watching her dance with her mom to “Brick House”, house parties (where it wasn’t unheard of for Emily to split her pants on the dance floor) and of course dancing in my car.  So in her memory and love for music I decided to make a collaborative playlist, “Songs for Emily”. This isn’t a playlist of sad songs, but of ones released after her passing that I know she would love to boogie too. I hope there is music in heaven cause I plan on dancing with her someday.

Feel Free to add your own tracks – this playlist ended up being basically a dance party so tune in, turn it up and dance.
